چکیده

Not to be confused with emission spectroscopy, the detection of mobile source emissions by means of a remote sensing device (RSD) is almost entirely an application of absorption spectroscopy. In this article we discuss its application to the measurement of individual vehicle emissions remotely as the vehicle drives by in its normal driving mode. Most studies and commercial implementation have involved automobiles and light duty trucks.1–8* However, the same technology has been applied to heavyduty trucks,9 locomotives,10 snowmobiles,11 and airplanes in taxi and takeoff modes.12 The challenge in all these applications is to make precisely collocated absorption measurements at 100 Hz in both the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) regions of the spectrum with low noise. The ability to measure 1/1000

Long-term trends in California mobile source emissions and ambient concentrations of black carbon and organic aerosol.

A fuel-based approach is used to assess long-term trends (1970-2010) in mobile source emissions of black carbon (BC) and organic aerosol (OA, including both primary emissions and secondary formation). The main focus of this analysis is the Los Angeles Basin, where a long record of measurements is available to infer trends in ambient concentrations of BC and organic carbon (OC), with OC used her...

Cross road and mobile tunable infrared laser measurements of nitrous oxide emissions from motor vehicles

Context Abstract: Nitrous oxide (NO2) is a potent greenhouse gas whose atmospheric budget is poorly constrained. One known atmospheric source is the formation of N2O on three-way motor vehicle catalytic converters followed by emission with the exhaust. Previous estimates of the magnitude of this N2O source have varied widely. Two methods employing tunable infrared lasers to measure N2O/CO2 rati...

An LUR/BME Framework to Estimate PM2.5 Explained by on Road Mobile and Stationary Sources

Knowledge of particulate matter concentrations <2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5) across the United States is limited due to sparse monitoring across space and time. Epidemiological studies need accurate exposure estimates in order to properly investigate potential morbidity and mortality. Previous works have used geostatistics and land use regression (LUR) separately to quantify exposure. This work c...

Spatiotemporal distributions of ambient oxides of nitrogen, with implications for exposure inequality and urban design.

UNLABELLED Intra-urban differences in concentrations of oxides of nitrogen (NO(x)) and exposure disparities in the Tampa area were investigated across temporal scales through emissions estimation, dispersion modeling, and analysis of residential subpopulation exposures. A hybrid estimation method was applied to provide link-level hourly on-road mobile source emissions. Ambient concentrations in...

Analysis of Particulate Matter Emission Factors in the Part5 Model

Introduction The EPA's PART5 model, similar in structure to the MOBILE5a model, calculates g/mi exhaust emissions of PM and SOx from 12 classes of motor vehicles. It also calculates g/mi emissions of road dust and particles from tire wear and brake wear1. The g/mi emission factors of PART5 can be multiplied by estimates of VMT in a particular region to produce a total inventory of mobile-source...
